This yard had all the right bones - good lawn, mature trees, established plants. What it needed was something to tie it all together and give it a finished, intentional look. That's exactly what we set out to do.
We installed landscape curbing throughout the property to create clean, defined edges around every bed. The curbing runs from the front entry beds all the way around to the side and back of the house - even the tree rings in the yard got the same treatment. It creates a consistent look across the whole property, and it also makes mowing and edging a lot easier going forward.
For the ground cover, we went with red lava rock. It's a great choice for homeowners who want a low-maintenance option that still has real visual impact. Lava rock doesn't break down and wash away like mulch does - it holds its place, suppresses weeds well, and keeps that rich color season after season. We did use red-dyed mulch in the tree rings to complement the lava rock without competing with it.
The plants were placed with both looks and practicality in mind. Hostas along the foundation and side beds, ornamental grasses and irises in the front corner beds, and boulder accents throughout to add some natural texture. Every element has a purpose - whether it's filling in a space, providing structure, or just adding a little color.
The end result is a yard that looks sharp from every angle. The curbing keeps things contained, the rock keeps maintenance light, and the plants give it life. It's a setup that looks great right now and stays that way without a ton of work.
