Lake properties are a different animal to work with. The terrain slopes, the soil near the shoreline behaves differently, and every design decision has to hold up to the elements year-round. So when this Cedar Lake homeowner came to us wanting a real outdoor living space - not just a slab of concrete near the water - we knew we had to approach it carefully and build it right.
What we ended up with is a full outdoor setup that ties together several elements into one cohesive space. The paver patio sits as the centerpiece, built with large-format textured pavers in a warm gray tone and framed by a contrasting border that follows the curved layout of the space. That curve wasn't just a design choice - it helps the whole patio feel natural against the shoreline rather than boxed in.
The built-in firepit sits right in the middle of the action. It's got a clean round cap, a quality gas ring, and plenty of room for seating all the way around. Next to that, we constructed a retaining wall with capped pillars along the yard-facing edge. That wall is doing real structural work - it's holding back grade changes between the lawn and the elevated patio surface - while also looking sharp from both sides. Large natural boulders were set along the waterfront edge to anchor the softscape and add a rugged, natural contrast to the clean pavers.
The softscape and mulched beds run along the path leading to the patio and around the boulder zone near the water. Irrigation was worked into the plan so the plantings actually have a shot at thriving without constant babysitting. It's the kind of detail that's easy to overlook on the front end but makes a big difference in how the space holds up season after season.
From the lawn-level view you can see how the retaining wall and patio work together as one unit - the wall caps and the patio border match up, the lines are clean, and the whole thing reads as intentional. That's what separates a well-built outdoor space from one that just looks like a collection of separate projects thrown together. This one was designed and built as a complete package, and it shows.
