This Cedar Lake backyard is well on its way to becoming a serious outdoor entertaining space. We're mid-build on a scope that includes a boulder wall, fire pit patio, sitting wall, and a buffet area - everything this homeowner needs to host friends and family without stepping foot inside.
Here's what we were working with: a lakefront yard with a natural grade change that needed to be addressed before anything else could go in. That's where the boulder wall comes in. Large natural boulders are being set along the perimeter to hold the grade, and they pull double duty - functional retaining and a look that fits the natural surroundings of a lake property perfectly.
The gravel base you see spread across the patio footprint is exactly how a long-lasting patio starts. That compacted stone base is what keeps pavers from shifting and settling over years of freeze-thaw cycles. It's not the glamorous part of the job, but it's the part that determines whether your patio still looks great five or ten years from now. We don't cut corners on it.
Once the base work is locked in and the boulder wall is complete, the sitting wall and buffet area go in. The sitting wall gives guests a place to land without dragging chairs around, and the buffet area makes outdoor cooking and serving actually functional - not just a folding table situation. The whole layout is designed around how people actually use a backyard space.
This one is going to be a showstopper when it's done. A fire pit with lake views, a dedicated entertaining layout, and natural boulder work that ties it all together. Stay tuned - the finished result is worth the wait.
